Capital Campaign - Thank you for a great start—help us keep it going

Thank you to the many members who have already supported the Friends of Albany Tennis Club capital campaign. We’re grateful to share that, thanks to your generosity, we’ve raised 30 percent of our goal in less than a week.

This early support tells us how much our members care about keeping ATC comfortable, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone.

If you haven’t yet had a chance to participate, would you consider a $100 donation to help fund several practical improvements around the club?

Improvements for Everyone

Mixed Doubles Championship Result

Wim, Megan, Betty, and Scott were the Mixed Doubles finalists!

The team of Betty Lin and Scott Nevins narrowly defeated Wim Blindenbach and Megan Kelly 6-4, 7-6(3) to capture the 2025 Mixed Doubles crown! The match was played on October 23rs at 9:00am at the Elm Avenue Park courts in Bethlehem. Congratulations to both teams for reaching the final match. There were nearly 16 teams in this draw....so it was a meaningful draw. Again, congratulations to both teams.

While there are about 40 helpers pictured in the photograph above, we actually had over 50 helpers!!....Several helpers had to leave just minutes before the photo was taken.

Here are a few thoughts.....

The circle of helpers is symbolic of oneness, unity, and inclusion. I think this captures the ATC community of players, don't you?
We're proud of our association with the ATC and we are fortunate to belong......
We expressed our gratitude for our hardworking and talented staff (Harry Lentz, Chris Mercogliano, Jack Curry, Chris Bradt, Daryl Bradt, Nicholas Demarco, and Declan Chirlin.)
We also acknowledged the unsung heroes of the club....our Board of Directors......men and women who contribute many skills to improve our club.
Gary Henning, our club president, thanked everybody for coming out to help put our CLUB TO BED and welcomes the return of everyone in 2026! Gary also mentioned significant work on our grassy islands (new sod!) is scheduled to happen this week!
I'd also like to thank Steve Beditz for leading the WORK PARTY effort and being so ultra-organized in the arrangement and securing of equipment and supplies.

I'd like to wish everyone good health during the off-season.

I am grateful for countless friendships at our club. I feel lucky to be with you.

15-LOVE FUNDRAISER - Success

The fundraiser to support the 15-Love youth tennis program was a tremendous success. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised the funds needed to help expand opportunities for young players to learn, grow, and enjoy the sport. We’re grateful to everyone who contributed and helped make a lasting impact on the next generation of tennis enthusiasts.

Men's Club Singles Championship Result

We reached the final match after starting with 33 competitors in the Men's Club Singles DRAW. Jackson Regan is our 2025 CLUB CHAMPION after dismissing our Runner-up Max Levine 6-2, 6-3 in the championship match. Congratulations, Jackson!

We Have a New Women's Singles Champion! It's Sonam Sherpa!

The Women's Club Singles Match was played this morning at 9:00am. The top two seeds, #1 Emma Gordon and #2 Sonam Sherpa, reached the final stanza and delighted a small group of spectators with endless rallies and evident determination and effort. These two friends pushed each other physically with a 2 1/2 hour match ending in a 6-4, 4-6, (10-8) final tally.

The third set breaker mirrored the ups and downs of the first two sets with Sonam taking early control of the match breaker with poise and consistency. She built a 7-3 lead and appeared on the cusp of taking the club crown. Emma had other plans though and quickly won the next 5 points to gain an 8-7 advantage.....only two points from defending her 2024 title. Sonam gathered herself and played two brilliant points to earn the first match point at 9-8. A lengthy rally ensued on match point and the match reached its terminal point when a Sonam's two-handed backhand clippled the net cord and dripped over onto Gordon's side of the net.

Game- Set - Match! The two young women embraced and demonstrated appreciation for each other and respect for our game of choice.

Well done, Emma and Sonam!

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Albany Country Club for graciously hosting a Men’s Tennis Interclub. It was a fantastic morning filled with great matches, good sportsmanship, and plenty of camaraderie. The well-kept courts and warm hospitality made for an enjoyable experience for all players involved. We appreciate the effort and look forward to more exciting interclub events in the future!

This weekend, we captured some great moments of our incredible staff enjoying the courts—not just keeping the club running, but truly living the tennis lifestyle they help create every day!

Our manager Larry is the mastermind behind our weekly play schedules and programs, making sure there’s always something exciting happening on court for members of all levels. His leadership keeps everything running smoothly.

Jack C., one of our dedicated pros, kicks off the day with morning lessons and clinics. His early energy and expert instruction help members sharpen their game before the day even starts.

In the afternoons and evenings, Chris B. takes the reins with personalized coaching sessions. He also heads up the popular Wednesday Night Singles, which continues to grow week after week.

Behind the scenes but always ahead of the game, Chris M. and Harry L. are the early risers who maintain the courts daily before most of us are even awake. Thanks to their hard work, our playing surfaces are always in top condition.

It’s not just a job for this crew—it’s a passion. We're lucky to have such a dedicated and talented team, and it’s great to see them enjoying the club alongside our members.

Please Note Court Irrigation Times

IRRIGATION TIMES - Do you know the courts require watering daily? If we don't get rain, we irrigate the courts every day from 1-3pm. The irrigation system activates automatically at 1:00pm. Therefore, the courts are CLOSED from 1-3pm everyday.

New Irrigation System Installation

ATC has contracted with H2Mow Lawn & Sprinkler, LLC to install a new irrigation system. The project is expected to be completed in time to prepare the courts for our usual mid-May opening.

This new irrigation system ensures the club's clay courts remain in top condition, improving the playing experience, conserving water, and saving time and labor. It's a smart investment that helps our tennis club thrive.

2024 Season Wrap

I think we can all agree that we have had a successful 2024 ATC tennis season. As the season draws to a close, we are thankful to our wonderful staff who have kept the courts in great condition and created tennis opportunities for all who want to play. Our 2024 members tournament attracted lots of competitors and the matches were great to see.

Thank you to our club manager Larry Y. and to our staff including Chris M. and Harry L. Also, thank you to our maintenance and engineering team of Steve B., Dave M. and Steve A. for keeping the infrastructure working. Our Board President, Bruce McB deserves our thanks for so many activities throughout the year. He relentlessly works to keep the ATC a great place to see our friends, play some tennis and take some ribbing. Thanks to our officers (Ned F. treasurer, Theresa C. secretary and Gary H. vice president) for their efforts. Thank you to our pros Chris B. and Jack C. for their support.

Reuse and Recycling

We continue to collect tennis balls for reuse and recycling. You can bring your old tennis balls to the ATC and they will be sorted for useable tennis balls for our pros and for recycling through our partner Recycleballs now located in West Virginia.

Thanks to the work of one of our members, we have been accepting used tennis sneakers for reuse. There is a receptacle at the ATC.

You will help the environment and provide footwear for those in need. Last year, we recycled over 5000 tennis balls which were kept out of US landfills. Keep up the great work ATC.

15-Love Fundraiser

We had a great response for the 15-Love Fundraiser, held on Sunday, October 1 (we were rained out on the originally-scheduled date of September 30) . Over 40 players participated; approximately $2,000 was raised. Herb Schultz, who is a founder of 15-Love in Albany and also a long-time member of ATC, gave opening remarks about the organization and acknowledged the dedication of 15-Love staff and various founders including Arthur Ashe and our own Dr. Manuel Alguero, another long-time member of ATC, who was also in attendance. The organization's goals are focused to reach out to inner-city youth through tennis.

Club Tournament

The Club Tournament is almost concluded in both Open (open to members and non-members) and Closed competitions (members only). Larry will report on the final results, but we want to acknowledge his time and efforts on this massive undertaking, as well as those of Chris Bradt, Assistant Tournament Director. Approximately 60 matches in the open and closed divisions were successfully scheduled. Kudos to both Larry and Chris Bradt for a job well done.

Infrastructure

August brought on many challenges. A break in our irrigation system occurred on August 27 (Sunday) and was repaired by September 1 (Friday). Thanks go to those who responded to the situation so quickly, particularly our Engineering Department (Steve Beditz and Steve Angle) and H2Mow, our contractors that surveyed the damage that Sunday afternoon. During this time the irrigation control software was replaced, and a water pressure reduction device was installed.

Another important development was the staining of the new maintenance shed, which provides shelter for our court equipment and materials. Thank you, Steve Beditz and Dave Motta, for your efforts in getting this done despite the weather. Also, a note of thanks goes to Gary Cimorelli for designing and installing the ramp to the shed.

Annual Meeting and Elections

The annual meeting for the Albany Tennis Club will be held via Zoom in November (date to be announced). During the meeting, we will report on the state of the club, various issues and undertakings for 2023 and 2024, and address any member concerns.

Elections are also right around the corner for the 13 seats of the ATC Board. With the exception of our manager and several part-time maintenance staff, the ATC is a volunteer organization that is dedicated to promoting tennis and maintaining our facilities.

If you are interested in becoming a Board member, please contact President Bruce McBride or any Board member to discuss what this position entails. The other Board members are Steve Angle, Theresa Cary (Secretary), Ned Foss (Treasurer), Gary Henning (Vice President), Jay Martin, Dave Motta, Betsy MacMaster, Marc Gerstman, and Pete Reed.

In Memoriam

We are saddened to report the passing of Kevin O’Hearn, who passed away after a long illness. Kevin was a long-standing member of the “Bierman Group” for doubles on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Co-players recall that he was a competitive player but always a gentleman both on and off the courts.

October marks the first anniversary of the passing of Terry Moskowitz. Terry was also an avid doubles player and a constant presence at the club for the morning women’s competition. As recounted by a close friend, she first met Ivor at a doubles match in Albany.
