| 2010 Annual Wynn Sorkin Memorial Tennis Tournament
Tournament looks forward to 2012.
Joe Bierman and Pat Sgarlata won the 17th Annual Wynn Sorkin Memorial Tennis Tournament. The finalists were Len Sippel and Nina Moore. There were 16 participants.
The Tournament was held on Monday, June 20, 2010 on a beautiful sunny day. A round robin, handicap (high-low pairings) doubles tournament for men/women 60 and older who are annual pass holders, the tournament honors Wynn Sorkin, a long term member and former vice president of the Albany Tennis Club. Wynn was also a well known Masters athlete in track and field, competing at the Empire State Games in the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin. He had always wanted to create a low-key, fun-filled tournament that was geared to senior players, and would not have a "one loss and out" format.
Steve Steinhardt, Wynn's son-in-law, runs the tournament. Lindsay provided valuable help to Steve in selecting the pairings, a role performed for many years by Frank Collins, who is no longer living in the Capital Region.
The matches were very competitive. Joe and Pat won 13 games and finished in a three way tie in their bracket, moving on to the finals by way of a tie-breaker. Len and Nina prevailed in their bracket with 14 games, by a margin of one game. All bracket matches were played using no-ad scoring. Five games won each of the three bracket set. Cumulative games won in all bracket matches determined the two teams that played in the finals. The score in the finals, played under the same scoring rules, was 5-2.
The winners and finalists received engraved trophies, bearing the name of the tournament, as prizes.
